Biomass-silica aerogel with thermal conductivity of 0.012–0.018 W/m·K — delivering superior insulation, environmental remediation, and circular solutions from waste.
Whitesand Aerogel Inc. is a 100% Indigenous-owned cleantech company based in Ottawa, Ontario, with deep roots in Northwestern Ontario and the Whitesand First Nation territory. Cardboard walls once kept family warm. Today we transform abundant poplar wood waste — a forestry byproduct — into high-performance biomass-silica aerogel.
Our mission is to create circular-economy solutions that address energy waste, environmental cleanup, and community resilience while building economic opportunity and reconciliation in Northern communities. With 25+ years of hands-on restoration and construction expertise informing our approach, we are restoring balance through practical innovation.
Beginnings — cardboard walls that kept family warm. The spark for better insulation.
One material platform. Thermal conductivity of 0.012–0.018 W/m·K — roughly two to three times the insulating power of conventional fiberglass or mineral wool per unit thickness.
Poplar and related biomass waste from forestry operations is converted into silica aerogel precursors through responsible, circular processes.
Precision sol-gel production in partnership with CEPROCQ (recommended by the National Research Council Canada), with PET fiber reinforcement and BÜCHI spray drying for Aerocore™.
Hybrid biomass-silica composition opens pathways for recovery. We design for end-of-life reclamation rather than landfill as the default.
Aerocore™ branches into Aeroloft™, Aerosorb™, Aerostone™, Aeroarch™, and Aerosole™ — watch the product family in under a minute.
One biomass-silica platform. From buildings and remediation to footwear hybrids and community shelters — the full Aerocore™ line.
The foundational aerogel material that powers the product line.
High-performance boards, blankets & loose-fill. 2–3× the insulating power of typical fiberglass per thickness.
High-surface-area forms optimized for oil, hydrocarbon, and heavy-metal adsorption.
Ultra-thin sheets and custom forms for space- and weight-constrained systems.
Compact, high-performance insulation for portable and rapid-deployment shelters.
Ultra-light thermal insoles — breathable porous aerogel core for all-day comfort in extreme conditions.
Aerocork hybrids — aerogel bonded with biomass composites for footwear, panels, and circular product lines.
Across the entire product line — from waste feedstock to end-of-life pathways.
Converting forestry waste into high-performance products while supporting lower energy demand and reduced landfill burden.
Creating 10–20+ good jobs in Year 1 with plans for significant scaling in the Thunder Bay region and surrounding communities.
Portable Outdoor Shelter Homes and insulated solutions. Commercial revenue helps fund free or low-cost units for shelters and First Nations.
“Our commercial success is the engine that drives meaningful jobs, reconciliation, and community resilience in the North.”
